I hate to admit this, but I need a catnap. I mean a serious, curled-up-in-the-sun-won’t-wake-up-for-hours catnap. Why? That Men’s Big Ten tournament wore me out. I mean, what an emotional roller coaster. First the tourney opened with wins by Illinois and Nebraska. And day 2 of the tourney did not disappoint. Litter-ally.
Overtime greeted guests of #54Games43Days as Northwestern’s Alex Olah hit a buzzer-beating fallaway as time expired, sending the Wildcats to OT against Michigan. From high above the court on my perch on the catwalk, I watched as Michigan’s Zak Irvin hit a clinching jumper with 0:03 left in OT to push the Wolverines to a 72-70 victory.
Game 25 saw the first of two second-round upsets, as No. 12-seed Illinois got past fifth-seeded Iowa in another nail biter. In game 26, Ohio State got 24 points from Marc Loving to get past Penn State, 79-75. In the nightcap and game 27, No. 11-seed Nebraska got 20 points from Shavon Shields to upset Wisconsin, 70-58. The tourney closed with Michigan State in their 4th straight Big Ten Championship game taking the title home. Paws-itively intense. Here at Bankers Life Fieldhouse we are wishing Butler, IU, and Notre Dame good luck in the Tournament. Make Indiana proud!
The even better news is that my team, the #HickoryPacers, were back in town Tuesday night, marking game 35 of #54Games43Days. They took on the Celtics, which brought former Butler Coach Brad Stevens back to town. At halftime, we honored the legendary 1954 Milan High School state championship team, the inspiration for the movie Hoosiers! They were presented with their very own Hickory jerseys.
So far during the #54Games43Days, we’ve seen over 253,000 fans walk through the Fieldhouse and a total of 5,088 points scored. Isn’t that crazy? Think about that. 35 games, 253,000 fans, and 5,088 points in just 21 days. Another paaaaw-some week of basketball at Bankers Life Fieldhouse, but still plenty of action ahead of us. Stay tuned as we tip off another week of action!
